Avedon: Women at Gagosian Gallery, Davies Street (until October 26) is a small retrospective of fashion photographer Richard Avedon’s iconic work. Focusing on photographs from the 1960s and 1970s featuring women in motion, the exhibition pays a tribute to Avedon’s fantastic sense of design, choreography and compositional awareness. Fashion icons such as Twiggy, Veruschka and Ingrid Boulting are caught in graceful, aerodynamic movements in pictures which became key references in the history of fashion photography. But beyond fashion photography, these pictures contain elements of photographic abstraction, becoming truly artistic objects. Airy and joyful, Avedon’s photographs capture the grace and joy which are the essence of the 60s and 70s couture.
